Full plot (contains spoilers)

Mara is a young Albanian woman who dreams of honing her skills as a cellist. After moving to Italy to attend the conservatory, she soon realizes how fiercely competitive the world of aspiring musicians is. Aware of her talent and knowing she can demand the utmost of herself, Mara chooses the most difficult cello course in Ferrara, taught by a strict and demanding instructor whom she nevertheless finds fascinating. Mara manages to join a chamber trio, but the increasingly destructive relationship that develops between her and the ruthless teacher does not help her overcome her difficulties. A bereavement plunges her into a deep crisis, and she decides to leave the school. She continues to practice on her own, until music becomes the sole obsession of her life. She reduces her needs to a minimum, eliminating everything superfluous and choosing to survive with just 100 objects. As she edges ever closer to self-destruction, Mara finally triumphs over both herself and her teacher with the brilliant composition she manages to create.
