A couple faces an agonizing decision after learning that their unborn child has Down syndrome and a serious heart defect.
The story
Astrid, a cabaret performer, is in a relationship with her manager, Markus, and they already have a child together. Six months into Astrid’s second pregnancy, a routine checkup reveals that their unborn child will have Down syndrome. Further examinations uncover a serious heart defect requiring surgery immediately after birth, while doctors cannot precisely determine the extent of the child’s intellectual and physical disabilities before birth. Astrid and Markus face a deeply difficult choice about continuing the pregnancy, and the possibility of a late-term abortion leads to arguments and discussion within and beyond their family.

Astrid is a cabaret performer and is in a relationship with her manager, Markus. They have a child together. When Astrid is six months pregnant with their second child, the couple learns during a routine checkup that their unborn child will be born with Down syndrome. They must decide whether to let the child, who will have intellectual and physical disabilities, be born or to proceed with a late-term abortion. Further examinations reveal that the child also has a serious heart defect and would therefore need surgery immediately after birth. The extent of the intellectual and physical disabilities cannot be determined precisely before birth. After many arguments and discussions, both within and outside the family, Astrid realizes that she alone can make the decision. She decides to have an abortion in the seventh month of pregnancy. She then goes public with her decision.
