Full plot (contains spoilers)
In 1884 Arizona Territory, Dan Evans, a debt-ridden rancher, encounters the outlaw Ben Wade and his gang. Evans agrees to a deal with the railroad's representative, Grayson Butterfield, to escort Wade to the Yuma Territorial Prison in exchange for money to clear his debts. The journey is fraught with peril; the posse is ambushed by Apaches and later faces a deadly standoff in a construction camp. Meanwhile, Wade's gang, led by the ruthless Charlie Prince, hunts the posse. In the town of Contention, the tension peaks as the posse and the gang converge. During the final escort to the train, Evans and Wade share a moment of mutual respect regarding their pasts and the cost of their choices. While Charlie Prince's interference leads to a violent confrontation, Wade ultimately ensures Evans's terms are met. Wade boards the train, and Evans, having fulfilled his mission and secured his family's future, dies as the train departs. Wade remains on the train, while his loyal henchman is dealt with by the outlaw.
