When God announces the Apocalypse for New Year’s Eve, the Holy Spirit tries to show Jesus Christ the beauty of earthly life.
The story
Hage, the Holy Spirit, has lived on Earth in human form for more than 2,000 years, selling church supplies. On Christmas Eve, Jesus Christ arrives with news that God plans the Apocalypse for December 31. Hage has no veto power, and he is already preparing a musical for New Year’s Eve at his friend Friedl’s nightclub. Hoping to show Christl how beautiful life can be, Hage brings him into the world of the show. Christl meets Mona, its leading lady, becomes enthralled with her, and readily takes a role in the musical.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Hage, the Holy Spirit, has lived on Earth in human form for more than 2,000 years and sells church supplies (flavored communion wafers, holy-water concentrate, weeping Madonnas). On December 24, Hage comes home from work and sits down to dinner with his housekeeper, Frau Holacek, when there is a knock at the door. Christl, Jesus Christ, is standing outside. He tells Hage that Papa (God) is planning the Apocalypse for December 31. Hage, however, is in the middle of preparations for his musical, “Holy Spirit Megastar,” which is due to premiere on New Year’s Eve at his friend Friedl’s nightclub, the “Beverly Hills.” Even though Hage is part of the Holy Trinity, he has no veto power, so he shows Christl how beautiful life can be. Along the way, Christl meets Mona, the musical’s leading lady. Enthralled by her, Christl readily takes a role in the show. After a night of heavy drinking, Christl is supposed to drive Hage home, but he runs Mona over. At first Hage wants to get rid of the body, until he remembers that Christl, according to the Bible, can bring the dead back to life, just as he already brought Lazarus back (something Christl cannot remember). Friedl, however, cannot stop worrying about Mona’s disappearance—she is his star attraction—so he drives to Hage’s house. After a brief conversation with Frau Holacek, she has to drive him home because his car is stuck in the snow. Frau Holacek helps Friedl at his nightclub, and the two gradually grow closer. Friedl then sends one of his underlings to look for Hage. Hage has had his damaged car towed by the ÖAMTC to a hotel, where he has checked in so Christl can bring Mona back to life. The next day, at Hage’s house, Friedl learns from a conversation with the ÖAMTC where Hage is staying. Hage has gone with Christl to a hospital, where Christl is supposed to perform the miracle of healing the sick. Hage pays a woman who is there to fool Christl into thinking he can perform miracles. On their way to the hotel, the two see Friedl coming out of it after he accidentally catapulted Mona from the balcony into a bush through carelessness. Friedl assumes he has killed Mona. After Christl recognizes the bus driver as his “patient” on the way to Hage’s, their paths separate, and Christl takes shelter with Pastor Erdinger, whom he asks about bringing the dead back to life. Meanwhile, Friedl and Frau Holacek spend the night together, and in the morning Friedl intends to turn himself in to the police over Mona’s death. Before that, Christl reaches Hage’s house, where he revives Mona. Frightened, she runs into the street and is accidentally run over again by Friedl. Christl wants to speak with his Papa together with Hage, since he too is now against the Apocalypse. After the two return, they bring Mona back to life again in front of Friedl and Frau Holacek. The next day, the musical has its premiere, and Papa is also in the nightclub. Friedl tells him that bringing Mona back to life has made him a new man. As punishment for preventing the Apocalypse, Hage is turned into a pigeon, which Friedl, a pigeon-hater, shoots, thereby setting off the Apocalypse. In the world newly created ten days later, Christl and Mona are the first people and meet Hage in human form. Mona is pregnant; this is already her third child. They already have a daughter and a son. The daughter has been baptized with the name Frau Holacek, and the son is called Friedl, because their parents believe the two were friends in a previous life. The voice of the child narrating the story off-screen belongs to the daughter.
