A struggling rapper in Detroit must navigate a crumbling personal life and a competitive hip-hop scene to find his voice.

The story

In 1995, aspiring rapper Jimmy Smith Jr., known as B-Rabbit, lives in a run-down Detroit trailer home with his alcoholic mother, sister, and a volatile live-in boyfriend. While his friends encourage him, Jimmy struggles with self-doubt and the challenges of a music scene dominated by a different demographic. After a humiliating experience at a local rap battle, he faces a grueling reality of manual labor and personal instability. However, a series of interactions with a local woman and a confrontation with his household's reality force him to take initiative. As he navigates the tensions of his personal life and the competitive underground rap scene, he must decide how much he is willing to risk to succeed.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

In 1995, Jimmy Smith Jr. (B-Rabbit) lives in a Detroit trailer park with his mother Stephanie, sister Lily, and his mother's boyfriend Greg. After a humiliating loss at a rap battle at 'the Shelter', Jimmy struggles to maintain his job at a car factory while dealing with his mother's impending eviction. He forms a bond with a woman named Alex and finds his voice during a confrontation at his workplace. His personal life fractures when he physically confronts Greg, leading to Greg's departure. Tensions rise with his friend Wink, who is promoting his rivals, the 'Leaders of the Free World'. After a physical altercation with the rival crew, Jimmy is challenged to a final showdown at the Shelter. He faces the crew's leader, Papa Doc, in a high-stakes battle. Jimmy wins by exposing Papa Doc's privileged background, ultimately choosing to return to his work rather than take a hosting role. The film concludes with Jimmy's growth as an artist and a man.
