Full plot (contains spoilers)

Private investigator Tom Welles is hired by an attorney to investigate an 8mm film found in a deceased man's safe that appears to show a real murder. The investigation leads him to the mother of the girl in the film, Mary Ann Mathews, and eventually into the underground world of fetish pornography in Hollywood. Partnering with a local clerk, Welles tracks down a producer of extreme films. The investigation takes a dangerous turn when they are ambushed by the attorney and a talent scout, who reveal the film is real and was commissioned by the deceased man. After a violent confrontation where several characters are killed, Welles learns the man who commissioned the film committed suicide. Seeking justice, Welles tracks down the remaining conspirators, eventually confronting and killing the man known as 'Machine,' who is revealed to be a man acting out of personal pleasure. The film ends with Welles returning to his family, still haunted by the horrors he witnessed.
