A newly discovered skull believed to be prehistoric draws anthropologist Tobias Schmidt-Eberbach away from his planned wedding.

The story

On Friday the thirteenth, anthropologist Tobias Schmidt-Eberbach is due to marry, but a skull believed to belong to a prehistoric human, discovered in a sand pit and named A.D.A.M., draws him away to the excavation. His bride waits in vain at the registry office while Tobias turns to the find and considers how to present it at a scientific conference in Berlin. There, young hitchhiker Uschi Müller, whose unconventional manner contrasts with Tobias’s orderly nature, settles into his car without asking and disrupts the skull researcher’s already unsettled life.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Friday the thirteenth is no reason for passionate anthropologist Tobias Schmidt-Eberbach to call off his planned wedding—unless something even more sensational gets in the way of this prehistorian’s plans. A skull believed to belong to a prehistoric human has been found in a sand pit, and is promptly christened A.D.A.M. Tobias drops everything and rushes to the excavation site to get a closer look at the spectacular find. Meanwhile, his capricious bride waits all alone at the registry office in vain for her husband-to-be. Tobias is already wondering how he will present his sensational discovery at an upcoming scientific conference in Berlin when, in parallel, the police launch a wild chase for a serial killer who prefers to beat his victims to death with a shovel. Tobias’s friend Werner von Seydlitz, a “mad scientist” type, is also lurking in the background, everywhere and all the time, syringe at the ready, after the human diencephalon. To complete the chaos, young hitchhiker Uschi Müller also turns up in Berlin. Her unconventional nature makes her the complete opposite of the well-organized Tobias. That doesn’t stop the lively, resourceful girl from making herself at home in his car without asking, and thoroughly turning the skull researcher’s life upside down from then on. Tobias’s life is thrown into complete disarray when the skull A.D.A.M. temporarily disappears from his sight as well. When Tobias finally wants to show his colleagues his sand-pit discovery at the Berlin Congress Center, a splendid cabbage belonging to a proud farmer emerges from the hatbox—which had been his makeshift skull container and had meanwhile been switched with another one…
