Full plot (contains spoilers)

In Moscow, corrupt official Viktor Chagarin attempts to seize a secret file from whistleblower Yuri Komarov. Jack McClane, an undercover CIA agent, is imprisoned and is rescued by his estranged father, NYPD Detective John McClane, during a courthouse explosion. The pair discovers Jack is a CIA operative and they must navigate a series of ambushes to reach a safe deposit box. They eventually travel to Pripyat, Ukraine, where they discover the 'file' is actually a secret passage to a vault containing €1 billion worth of weapons-grade uranium. It is revealed that Komarov and his associate Irina are attempting to steal the uranium for the black market. After a series of high-stakes confrontations involving helicopters and heavy weaponry, the McClanes eventually defeat the antagonists. Jack kills Komarov after he is thrown into helicopter blades, and John stops Irina's suicide attack. The film ends with the father and son reconciling and returning home to the United States.
