The story
Augusto Matraga is a violent rancher whose life is upended when his wife betrays him and his enemies ambush him, leaving him for dead. Rescued, he turns to religion and tries to move away from his former violence. His efforts are tested when he meets Joãozinho Bem Bem, a hired gun whose presence stirs the aggressive instincts Augusto is attempting to abandon. He begins to waver between his violent temperament and the mysticism he can no longer leave behind.

Augusto Matraga is a violent rancher. Betrayed by his wife, he is ambushed by his enemies and left for dead. But he is rescued and turns to religion. Augusto meets Joãozinho Bem Bem, a hired gun who causes him to experience an inner conflict by stirring the violent instincts in his personality. Matraga then begins to waver between his aggressive temperament and the mysticism he can no longer abandon.
