Full plot (contains spoilers)
Sam, a terminally ill cancer patient, is caught in a puppet theater in Manhattan during an alien invasion. After a series of casualties, she and a few others, including the nurse Reuben and the survivor Henri, are trapped as the military destroys bridges to contain the creatures. After Reuben is killed by a creature, Sam flees toward Harlem with her cat, Frodo. She encounters Eric, a British law student, and the two form an unlikely bond while navigating the ruined city. They seek out a pharmacy and eventually reach a ruined church. Despite the danger, Sam insists on visiting a jazz club in Harlem to fulfill a final wish. They eventually reach the waterfront, where Sam sacrifices herself to create a distraction, allowing Eric and others to escape by boat. The film ends with Sam alone in the street, listening to music before a creature appears.
