As Ally's career begins to rise, it starts to eclipse Jackson's own. Jackson "Jack" Maine, a country rock singer battling addiction, meets Ally, a talented but struggling singer-songwriter, at a drag bar. After a performance by Ally goes viral, they begin a romantic relationship while she rises to fame. Their lives diverge as Ally's career takes off while Jack's declines due to his health and substance issues. They marry, but the strain of his addiction and her success creates tension. After a series of personal struggles and a period of rehabilitation, Jack's health continues to decline. Following a tragic suicide, a grieving Ally performs a final tribute to him, finally performing under the name Ally Maine.
