The story

One morning in 1991, alcoholic NYPD Detective Matt Scudder is drinking at his usual bar when three criminals kill the bartender in an attempted shakedown. Scudder pursues them and, in a chaotic gun battle, kills two and cripples the third. Eight years later, Scudder is retired and sober, working as an unlicensed private investigator.
