Abgefahren - Mit Vollgas in die Liebe (2004)

Young Mia is completely obsessed with cars and spends every spare minute tinkering with her mother’s old VW Beetle. Her big dream is to take part in the Paris–Dakar Rally one day. To raise the money for the required licence, she works as a bicycle courier. On a delivery, she encounters daredevil Cosmo and Sherin, a lesbian driving instructor, as they compete in an illegal street race. Afterward, Sherin takes Mia to her workshop, where two other young women are waiting. They build race cars there for illegal street races. Another street race takes place the next evening. Sherin and Cosmo are bitter rivals, with Cosmo always coming out on top. Sherin brings Mia into her clique. But when the police seize Sherin’s car, they are left without a vehicle. The important Airport Race is coming up in two weeks, however, with €5,000 in prize money at stake. Mia promptly takes her mother’s VW Beetle, which is then converted into a race car. A love-hate relationship develops between Mia and Cosmo, and it excites them both enormously. At another race, she promises him her car and a night with her if she loses. Meanwhile, Sherin keeps trying to seduce Mia, but with little success. Mia loses the race to Cosmo despite winning, because Sherin tampered with the fuel tank on Cosmo’s car and is caught. Cosmo tells Mia he will give the Beetle back to her. All he wants is a night with her. After they spend a lovely evening together, Cosmo hands Mia the car keys, and she undresses. But he doesn’t want her to sleep with him just because of the car. Confused, Mia hurries away. Out of jealousy, Sherin and her girls destroy Mia’s car. With Cosmo’s help, they repair it, and Mia falls in love with him too. They enter the Airport Race in separate cars. The VW representative Obermaier is also there, looking for drivers for the VW Junior Racing Team to compete in the Paris–Dakar Rally. Mia has to start from far back, but steadily catches up. When the showdown between Mia, Cosmo and Sherin comes, Sherin’s car rams Cosmo’s, causing him to roll over and get injured. Mia abandons the race and rushes to Cosmo’s wrecked car. Later, Mia visits him in hospital and kisses him passionately. The VW representative also turns up and tells them that they will both take part in the Paris–Dakar Rally. At the end of the film, they drive through the desert in a race car.
