A cash-strapped private detective’s job transporting a prize-winning rabbit becomes entangled with thieves’ plan to smuggle a stolen painting.

The story

Harry App is an awkward, clumsy private detective with few clients, so he accepts a potentially lucrative job from elderly Anni Rose: personally taking her prize-winning show rabbit, Mister Theo, to a rabbit show in Switzerland. Meanwhile, thieves Paul and Benno have stolen a valuable painting and want to smuggle it out of the country unnoticed. Disguised as clergymen, they hide the painting in Mister Theo’s carrier, entangling Harry’s unusual pet-transport assignment with their effort to move the stolen artwork.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Harry App is a somewhat awkward and clumsy private detective who is short on clients. For that reason, he takes any job that might bring in money—including one from an elderly woman named Anni Rose that could earn him a decent sum. The elderly client hires Harry to personally transport her prize-winning show rabbit, “Mister Theo,” to a rabbit show in Switzerland. With no real choice, App takes on the disliked job of pet-sitter. Meanwhile, the crooks Paul and Benno have stolen a valuable painting and want to smuggle it out of the country without attracting attention. To do so, they disguise themselves as clergymen and hide the painting in none other than “Mister Theo’s” carrier. Through a chain of events, Harry eventually misses the train from Munich to Lausanne. With no other option, he hitchhikes, and the attractive Jane gives him a ride in her car as far as the train’s next stop. As the story unfolds, he runs into Jane, who is also a detective, several more times. Harry has to squeeze into all sorts of costumes and is unceremoniously thrown off the train by Paul and Benno more than once. In the end, everyone involved still makes it to Lausanne in one piece, where the painting is returned to its rightful owner and the thieves are finally arrested. The clever Anni Rose pockets the gangsters’ money, “Mister Theo” wins his prize, and Harry and Jane end up empty-handed.
