A circle of longtime Parisian artistic figures reunites for its annual meal, where affection, rivalry and the passage of time surface in witty exchanges.
The story
A group of longtime friends, all prominent figures in Paris’s artistic milieu, keep an annual ritual of meeting at one of the capital’s celebrated restaurants. The circle includes a writer, sculptor, singer, philosopher, theater director and actor. Now older, these former “kings of Paris” remain quick-witted and self-mocking, but their bonds are far from simple: they love and dislike one another, and a meal’s retorts, drinks and songs bring out jealousy, admiration, cruelty, affection, pettiness and generosity. As they gather once more, the evening becomes a reflection on friendship and the way time changes it.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
A group of friends of a certain age, prominent figures in Paris’s artistic milieu, make the rounds of the French capital’s chic restaurants and gather every year at one of its most famous establishments, so as not to lose touch: a writer, a sculptor, a singer, a philosopher, a theater director, an actor... In this decades-old ritual, these former “kings of Paris,” whose humor and gift for self-mockery remain intact, love and hate one another, at once pathetic and irresistible. Over the course of a retort, a shot, or a song, jealousy gives way to admiration, cruelty to affection, pettiness to magnanimity. Over the course of a meal, with biting irony, the film explores friendship, which ages like the body, and makes these reunions farewells as well.
