Full plot (contains spoilers)
Hardin Scott is struggling with writer's block and a deep sense of loss after his muse and true love, Tessa, broke up with him a year ago. While his publisher pressures him to write a follow-up to his best-selling manuscript, Hardin is haunted by flashbacks. His mother suggests he travel to Portugal to make amends with Natalie, a woman he wronged in his youth by recording a private moment to win a bet. In Lisbon, Hardin confronts Natalie, who moved there to escape the viral backlash of his actions. After spending time with her and her friends, Hardin realizes the parallels between his treatment of Natalie and his relationship with Tessa. Following a physical altercation with Natalie's friends, Hardin's birth father bails him out and gives him a pep talk about moving forward while holding a place for Tessa in his heart. Inspired, Hardin begins writing a new book, 'Before', and gifts Natalie a coastal house. Back in America, Hardin and Tessa reunite as best man and maid of honor at a wedding. They apologize to one another and reconcile, with Hardin proposing to her. The film ends with a flash forward showing Hardin and a pregnant Tessa with their young daughter.
