In 2019, Yale professor Alma Imhoff hosts a dinner with her colleague Hank and student Maggie. After the party, Maggie accuses Hank of sexual assault. Alma is caught between the two, who both claim she is not supporting them. The conflict turns public when Maggie publishes her allegations in the Yale Daily News. During this, Alma discovers a newspaper clipping about her own past: a retracted rape accusation she made as a teenager against a man named Matthias Wolff, which led to his suicide. Amidst the fallout, Alma's tenure is paused due to a forged prescription. She eventually confronts Maggie, who slaps her.
