A disastrous class trip tests a teenager’s luck, courage, and rivalry as he tries to win Leonie’s heart.

The story

Fifteen-year-old Alfons’s school trip begins badly: he oversleeps, boards the departing bus in pajama pants, and discovers that his suitcase has been switched with his mother’s. Hoping to get closer to Leonie, he competes with his rival Nico for class representative. At a rundown hostel on Usedom, Nico draws Alfons into a bet over Leonie’s friendship, while Alfons’s familiar mishaps frustrate their teacher, Flickendorf. A cockroach prank goes wrong and forces the group to leave early for a villa in the Harz Mountains. There, the replacement climbing trip challenges Alfons, who is afraid of heights.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The school trip could hardly get off to a worse start for the now 15-year-old Alfons. First he oversleeps and is still wearing his pajama pants when the bus departs; on top of that, his suitcase has been switched with his mother’s. To get closer to his great love, Leonie, Alfons runs for class representative, just like his archrival Nico. At the rundown, poorly managed school hostel on Usedom, Nico persuades Alfons to make a bet over Leonie’s friendship. As usual, Alfons blunders from one awkward mishap to another, much to the dismay of his teacher, Flickendorf. When a prank involving cockroaches goes wrong, the stay is cut short because of a pest infestation, and they head instead to a villa in the Harz Mountains—a climbing trip is hardly a good alternative for Alfons, who is afraid of heights. With a teacher’s support, Alfons at least manages to climb a few meters up the rock face. Later, when he gets one over on the owner of the hostel, who wants to turn the former artists’ house into a luxury hotel, Leonie is visibly impressed. But that evening around the campfire, Nico tells her about the bet in order to discredit Alfons, and, as expected, Leonie is disappointed. However, she responds kindly to an apologetic message from Alfons. The next day, Alfons and Benni are left alone to cook for the others. Without noticing, Alfons puts far too much hot chili powder in the sauce, making it inedible. In the ensuing confrontation with Nico, Alfons accidentally splashes Flickendorf with the sauce and gets expelled from school for it. Later, Leonie tells him that they are fairly alike when it comes to bad luck; she, too, once blew up a chemistry lab. The following night, Nico disappears at dawn to secretly go to his mother. Her boyfriend does not want him around, but he can no longer stand living with his grandfather at all. Alfons notices and follows him with Benni, Leonie, and Emilia. They find Nico trying to take an old, condemned materials cable car down into the valley. He gets stranded above the abyss and is rescued at the last moment by Alfons, who overcomes his fear of heights. Impressed by this, Flickendorf revokes the expulsion, Nico and Alfons become friends, and at the end-of-year party Alfons finally gets together with Leonie.
