The film explores the rise and tragic death of hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur, from his revolutionary roots to his status as a global superstar.

The story

In 1995, a documentary filmmaker interviews Tupac Shakur at the Clinton Correctional Facility. The narrative flashes back to 1971, showing Tupac's mother, Afeni Shakur, and other Black Panther Party members being released from prison. Growing up in a neighborhood marked by injustice, Tupac is instilled with black pride while his revolutionary stepfather is caught by the FBI. As he matures, Tupac distances himself from his mother's ideals, attends the Baltimore School for the Arts, and begins a burgeoning music career with Digital Underground. Despite gaining popularity, his controversial lyrics create tension with producers as he navigates the complexities of fame and personal conflict.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The film follows Tupac Shakur's life, beginning with his upbringing in a revolutionary household where his mother was a Black Panther. After distancing himself from her ideals, Tupac finds success in the music industry, first with Digital Underground and later as a solo artist. He becomes a polarizing figure, generating both praise and controversy for his lyrics and public actions, including a high-profile arrest for shooting at police. The narrative covers his legal troubles, including a 1993 rape trial and a 1994 assault in a recording studio that led to an eighteen-month prison sentence. While incarcerated, he interprets a song by The Notorious B.I.G. as a diss track, leading to a public feud. Upon release, he signs with Death Row Records, collaborating with Dr. Dre on "California Love" before eventually launching his own company. The film culminates in September 1996, when Tupac is involved in a brawl in Las Vegas. While leaving a boxing match, he is shot multiple times in a drive-by shooting. The film concludes with onscreen text stating he was pronounced dead six days later at age 25, noting his massive commercial success and the fact that his murder remains unsolved.
