Full plot (contains spoilers)
In 1970s New York City, David Marks, the son of a powerful real estate tycoon Sanford Marks, marries Katie McCarthy, a working-class student. They move to Vermont to open a health food store called All Good Things, but Sanford manipulates David into returning to New York. Their relationship deteriorates; when Katie tries to leave, her funds are cut off. She disappears in 1982. Eighteen years later, a novel by David's friend, Deborah Lehrman, about a murder similar to the Marks case, leads to the reopening of the investigation. Lehrman is subsequently shot and killed. David is tried for the murder of a neighbor, Malvern Bump, and is acquitted. The film reveals a flashback suggesting David left his wife's remains in her car, which his father found. The film ends with David visiting his dying father and whispering, 'I miss her so much,' leaving it ambiguous whether he refers to Katie or his mother.
