A group of young German students find their romantic ideals of war shattered by the brutal reality of the front lines.
The story
During World War I, Professor Kantorek delivers a stirring speech about the glory of defending the fatherland, inspiring his students to enlist in the German Army. Led by Paul Bäumer, the young men enter the military with romanticized views of combat. However, their idealism is quickly dismantled by the harsh reality of military training under a brutal sergeant. Upon reaching the front, the 2nd Company faces the immediate violence of artillery and the grim atmosphere of the trenches. As they endure the horrors of war, the men must confront the physical and psychological toll of the conflict, while their initial delusions of glory are replaced by the stark, desperate reality of survival.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
After enlisting in the German Army, Paul Bäumer and his classmates face a brutal reality that shatters their romantic notions of war. They endure harsh training under Sergeant Himmelstoss before reaching the front, where they are immediately subjected to artillery fire. Paul becomes close with Corporal "Kat" Katzinsky, a veteran who provides guidance in the trenches. During a major attack, the company suffers heavy losses. When Himmelstoss arrives at the front, he is quickly killed. Paul finds himself in a shell-hole with a dying French soldier, and later, he and his friend Albert Kropp are severely wounded. Paul survives but finds Albert has lost his legs. During a brief furlough, Paul is shocked by the optimistic ignorance of his family and peers. Upon returning to the front, he finds the company filled with even younger replacements. He eventually learns of Kat's death from an aerial bomb. In the final moments, Paul sees a butterfly outside his trench; as he reaches out to touch it, he is killed by a sniper. The film ends with a superimposition of his classmates arriving at the front for the first time.
