Full plot (contains spoilers)
In 1917, 17-year-old Paul Bäumer and his friends enlist in the Imperial German Army, only to have their romantic views of war destroyed by the brutal reality of trench warfare. While Paul and his companion Kat survive the initial horrors, they face the constant threat of death. Simultaneously, German officials attempt to negotiate an armistice. As the war nears its end, the film depicts the desperate conditions of the soldiers, including the loss of friends and the psychological toll of the conflict. During a final, frantic attack ordered just before the ceasefire, Paul is killed in combat. The film concludes with the realization that his death was not recorded, as a new recruit finds his body and his belongings, leaving his sacrifice unacknowledged.
