A multi-billionaire oil tycoon refuses to pay the ransom for his kidnapped grandson, leading to a tense standoff between his family and the kidnappers.
The story
In 1973, 16-year-old John Paul Getty III, the grandson of the world's richest private citizen, is kidnapped in Rome by the 'Ndrangheta, a Mafia-like organized crime group. While his mother, Gail Harris Getty, desperately seeks help from her former husband, the multi-billionaire oil tycoon J. Paul Getty, he refuses to pay the ransom, fearing it would encourage further kidnappings. He instead tasks a negotiator and former CIA operative, Fletcher Chace, to investigate the case. As the media coverage intensifies and the situation with the kidnappers grows increasingly tense, the family must navigate a high-stakes standoff to secure the boy's release.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
In 1973, 16-year-old John Paul Getty III is kidnapped in Rome by the 'Ndrangheta. His mother, Gail, seeks help from his grandfather, J. Paul Getty, who refuses to pay the $17 million ransom to avoid encouraging future kidnappings. He tasks Fletcher Chace, a former CIA operative, to handle the negotiations. While Paul is held in a remote location, the situation with his captors becomes increasingly tense and violent. After a failed raid and the discovery of a different body, the kidnappers become more ruthless, eventually mutilating the boy. Negotiations eventually lead to a lower ransom of $4 million, which Getty only pays if Gail relinquishes custody of her children. After a series of tense negotiations and a final standoff in the town of Lauria, Paul is eventually reunited with his mother. Following Getty's death in 1976, Gail manages the inherited wealth, which includes a massive collection of art that eventually forms the basis of the J. Paul Getty Museum.
