A high-school songwriter must balance her band’s ambitions, a secret collaboration with her rival, and the friendships that matter most.
The story
In her final year of school, Ella persuades her three best friends to enter a songwriting contest as their band, Virginia Woolfpack. Her strongest rival is AlfaMK, an arrogant rapper she knows from her part-time job as a cleaner; his real name is Leon. Ella and Leon grow closer, and she records several musical hooks in his studio, which he uses in his contest song. Their collaboration becomes a secret from Ella’s friends, who are already uncertain about continuing the band after graduation. When the group’s different plans and doubts strain their friendship, Ella is caught between pursuing a musical opportunity with Leon and staying loyal to the band she formed with her friends.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Ella is in her final year of school and has formed the band Virginia Woolfpack with her three best friends. She persuades the girls to enter a songwriting contest. Her strongest rival is the arrogant rapper AlfaMK, whom Ella knows from her part-time job as a cleaner. AlfaMK’s real name is Leon. Before long, Leon and Ella grow closer. When Ella records a few hooks in Leon’s music studio and he uses them in his song for the contest, Ella finds herself torn between loyalties, because her three best friends have no idea about the collaboration. When Ella’s friends tell her that they all have very different plans after graduation and are more inclined to give up the band, Ella is deeply hurt. She and Leon arrange an appointment with a music producer. When the girls tell her they want to reconsider the band, she does go with them to the producer after all. But because her friends don’t take the appointment seriously, are even high, and then Leon shows up too, it all ends in disaster: her friends realize that Ella has betrayed them by working with Leon and kick her out of the band. Ella is initially distraught, but then makes one last attempt at the music contest final to win her friends back, together with Leon. She now knows that friendship is sometimes more important than a big career.
