Full plot (contains spoilers)
Fredi and Ed, who share a tiny room, are two young aspiring pianists who have to put their artistic ambitions aside to earn money in more prosaic ways. They work without much enthusiasm at a musical-instrument shop. Since they are both very handsome—Fredi dark-haired, Edi blond—they have no trouble winning over women. They even often roll dice to decide which of them will go out with which woman. A good acquaintance of the two men is Ernst Vogel, who works at the radio station and believes that Edi and Fredi have real musical talent. He therefore secretly records a sample of their piano playing and enters it in a radio competition. When the boys promptly win first prize, the two friends—and rivals—are delighted: they have won a trip to the snowy paradise of St. Moritz. Despite their tiny wallets, Fredi and Edi intend to really let loose there for once. They plan to party at the dance bar of the Royal Engadin. A little later, at their hotel, they meet a mysterious-seeming stranger who is rumored to be a real Turkish princess. She goes by the mysterious name Dschidschi da Costa and promptly turns both Germans’ heads. Even after she reveals that her real name is the very down-to-earth Elfriede Piepenbrink, Edi and Fredi can’t take their eyes off her. She works as a mannequin and is supposed to model 24 dresses here. The young woman can also sing, and her admirers’ hormones begin to run wild as she sings the lines, “Wait until your star turns / and don’t lose heart / For as soon as your star turns / things are sure to get better for you again.” In the end, none of it matters: when Elfriede meets the third member of their circle, the radio employee Ernst, and the sound of bells rings out from the tape recorder, the two kiss, and the model is certain: “I may not be able to marry all of them, but I can marry him!”
