To help his widowed mother find love, a grown engineering student pretends to be a 14-year-old—and complicates his own romance.
The story
Engineering student and musician Peter Erdmann plays in a rock band with his friend Tommy. He lives with his widowed mother, Sylvia, and wants her to find happiness again. Sylvia, however, is reluctant to let her admirer Bernd Werding learn her real age or that Peter is grown up, so Peter pretends to be a 14-year-old. When Kitty Steiner seeks musicians for a party hosted by her parents, she hires Peter and his band. Peter falls for Kitty, but his mother’s sudden appearance at the party threatens to expose their deception. Kitty suspects Peter is connected to Sylvia and begins investigating, setting up a tangle of misunderstandings and concealed identities.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Peter Erdmann is an engineering student and a musician. He has a rock band with his friend Tommy. He lives with his mother, who has been a widow for years. Sylvia is admired by Bernd Werding, a general sales representative. Peter cares deeply for his mother and wants her to find happiness again. However, she does not want Werding to know that she is ten years older than she claims to be, or that her son is already grown up. So Peter pretends to be a 14-year-old brat. He had received a distress call from his friend Tommy and had hurried home from his internship at a car factory. Kitty Steiner, the eldest of the three daughters of managing director Steiner and his wife, goes to the student union to find suitable musicians for a party her parents are hosting. There she more or less bumps into Peter, who falls for the beautiful young woman at once. Kitty hires him and his fellow musicians. The party is a great success, musically as well—until Peter’s mother Sylvia suddenly turns up with her admirer Werding, who must not recognize Peter under any circumstances. Kitty suspects that Peter is involved with Sylvia Erdmann, having seen him with her several times. She does not believe him when he confides that Sylvia is his mother, so she investigates for herself and discovers that mother and son are playing a game of hide-and-seek with Bernd Werding. She promises Peter, however, that she will keep quiet for now, since he assures her his mother will clear everything up soon. By now Werding has also grown suspicious. He follows up on his suspicions and discovers that Peter Erdmann is a 20-year-old student. In a letter, he tells Peter that he knows the truth but will withdraw for the time being. Peter now thinks Kitty has broken her promise and, disappointed, breaks up with her. At the jazz cellar where Peter and his friends are performing, a wild brawl breaks out when Kitty, whom Tommy has summoned by telephone, is harassed by a few troublemakers. Just as Peter’s group seems about to be overwhelmed, Werding suddenly appears and takes down the attackers one after another. At the police station, where Sylvia and Kitty’s parents have also been summoned, Werding tells a bewildered Sylvia that unfortunately he can marry only a woman who is at least 40 years old. Sylvia laughs and tells him that this is the least of their problems, since her birthday is in three weeks. Peter, who now knows he wronged Kitty, is happy to be able to make up with her.
