A philosopher balancing an academic life in Berlin returns to her East German village for her mother’s birthday and finds herself estranged from the world she left behind.
The story
Clara, a philosopher nearing forty, has built a life in Berlin’s intellectual circles while working on her doctorate. She lives in a shared flat in Kreuzberg, and her fifteen-year-old daughter Emma spends weekdays with her father in the suburbs. Clara is secretly involved with Max, a student in her seminar. When Clara returns to her East German countryside village for her mother’s birthday, she feels out of place among people she has known all her life. Her visit brings her face to face with the distance between her academic achievements and the routines and expectations of her family and former community.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Clara is nearly forty and has managed to escape her village in the East German countryside and rise into Berlin’s intellectual elite. The philosopher is currently working on her doctorate, lives in a shared flat in Kreuzberg, and is the mother of fifteen-year-old Emma, who stays with her father, Roland, in Berlin’s suburbs during the week. Clara is secretly having an affair with Max, a student from her seminar on utilitarianism. Her work focuses on Hegel’s concept of freedom. When Clara’s colleague Hanna comes to Clara’s university to give a talk and runs into Clara’s doctoral supervisor, Margot, in the corridor, Hanna voices her frustration at how badly and hurtfully Margot behaved in her job back when she had been Hanna’s lecturer in Erlangen twenty years earlier. When Clara travels back to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania for her mother’s birthday celebrations, she feels like a stranger in her old home and in her own family. Although Clara knows everyone in the village in the Uckermark, she has gradually lost touch with them. She is not the diplomat’s daughter she has pretended to be at university. She actually has a good relationship with her mother, and her relationship with Marcel, who runs the local pub, is familiar in its own way, though their day-to-day realities turn out to be completely different. Her mother cannot be proud of what Clara, a girl from the countryside, has achieved in her academic career. At least, that is what Clara accuses her of. Clara does not want every visit with her mother to consist of talking only about the weather. Clara’s grandmother, Charlotte, on the other hand, encourages her to make use of her potential, but also slips her a little money before she leaves, as if she were still a child.
