After escaping the walls of a dystopian city, a group of friends discovers a hidden world of advanced technology and genetic secrets.

The story

Set in a post-apocalyptic and dystopian Chicago, the story follows Tris Prior, her boyfriend Four, and their small group of friends escaping over the wall that encloses the city. Once outside, they discover new truths that will shift their alliances and introduce new threats. The group finds themselves in a world where the boundaries between their known society and the unknown exterior are blurred, forcing them to confront the reality of their situation and the dangers lurking beyond the city's confines.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

After escaping the city's wall, Tris, Four, and their friends are rescued by a high-tech military force and taken to the Bureau of Genetic Welfare. There, they learn that the world was ravaged by Purity Wars caused by genetic tampering, and Tris is revealed to be a 'genetically pure' individual. While the group is split between staying with the Bureau or returning to Chicago, tensions rise between the Factionless and the Allegiants. Tris eventually discovers the Bureau's true motives and the fact that Chicago was merely an experiment. In a final confrontation at the city's vault, the group works to stop a plan to use amnesia gas to 'reset' the population. Tris ultimately broadcasts a message to the world, revealing the Bureau's existence and declaring that Chicago is no longer their experiment, while Caleb detonates explosives to destroy the Bureau's cloaking shield.
