Allein unter Ärzten (2014)

The young mother Marla Westphal unexpectedly suffers a collapse. She is admitted to hospital, where her father, Harald Westphal, a former Bundeswehr soldier, never leaves her side and competes with Marla’s partner, Isko, a Finnish musician, over her care. At Harald’s insistence, Marla is discharged from hospital without a definitive diagnosis. She collapses again, this time with kidney failure. Back in hospital, Marla begins to come to terms with the possibility of dying and distances herself from her partner and her daughter. At first, she indignantly turns down Isko’s marriage proposal. At the same time, she grows closer to Mike, a young resident doctor who is the only one to recognize the right leads toward diagnosing Marla’s illness. To cope with the illness and the possible death of her second-oldest sister, Marla’s younger sister Tina turns to the goth scene. In the end, Harald realizes that his late ex-wife, Marla’s mother, also suffered from a hereditary illness. With this realization and the help of Mike, the resident doctor who had meanwhile been dismissed, Marla’s illness is correctly diagnosed and treated. She marries Isko and returns to her family.
