After losing his job and home, a macho man moves into an all-women shared apartment and becomes the subject of an experiment in changing his behavior.
The story
Tom Blattner, a die-hard macho, loses his job and is thrown out of the apartment he shares with his girlfriend. After a woman knocks him down when he tries to flirt with her, he finds temporary shelter with his shy colleague, Manfred. At a dinner Manfred hosts for Anette, Tom tries to charm her, but his performance bores her. Even so, Anette offers Tom a place in her all-women shared apartment. There, rather than simply being the lone man among women, he becomes part of an experiment intended to find out whether a macho can become emancipated. Tom initially resists the household’s expectations, setting up a challenge to his familiar behavior.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Fate is not kind to Tom Blattner, a die-hard macho. Fired by his boss and thrown out of the apartment he shares with his girlfriend, he is dealt one more blow when a woman knocks him to the ground with a punch as he tries to flirt with her. He finds temporary shelter with his shy colleague Manfred. One day, when Manfred has invited the attractive Anette over for dinner, Tom turns on what he believes to be his charm. Although his self-display visibly bores Anette, she offers to let him move into her all-women shared apartment. There, instead of being the “only man among the women,” Tom becomes a guinea pig in an experiment: Can a macho be turned into an emancipated man? Although the experiment quickly seems doomed to fail (among other things, Tom initially refuses outright to do the housework, despite being unemployed), he gradually realizes that he has to change his behavior to get ahead in life. Little by little, he sheds his macho antics, though not without the occasional relapse. In the end, he takes part in a feminist group’s attack on a porn cinema. In doing so, he has made the experiment an unequivocal success.
