A young director’s breakthrough brings him into a producer’s orbit, where a casting choice threatens to derail his next film.
The story
Young director Viktor Rote has scored an unexpected hit with his film “The Tin Cat,” attracting the attention of successful producer Georg Kuballa. Drawn into the world of film bureaucracy, Viktor faces a personal and professional dilemma: he now wants to give leading roles to his young lover, Nina Piel, rather than continue casting his wife, Riki Rote, an older professional actress. The decision sets up a confrontation between the two women. Meanwhile, Kuballa’s wealthy wife Lore and an out-of-touch screenwriter become involved, and the new film project begins to look increasingly difficult to control.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Young director Viktor Rote has finally scored an unexpected smash hit with his new film, “The Tin Cat.” This attracts the interest of film producer Georg Kuballa, who is responsible for countless hits. Rote is thus drawn into the machinery of film bureaucracy. The first problem he faces is of his own making: from now on, he would rather give the leading roles to his young lover, Nina Piel, instead of casting them, as he has until now, with his wife, Riki Rote, a considerably older professional actress. A full-blown confrontation with his rival, who is several years younger, is therefore inevitable. When Lore, the wealthy wife of the womanizing producer Kuballa, and an out-of-touch screenwriter also get involved, the entire film project threatens to get out of hand and end in utter chaos.
