Chief Inspector Mario Diller had failed to prove that his colleague Erich Kessel was innocent. As a result, Kessel has been in prison for two years. Shortly before his release, his fellow inmate Walid Schukri asks him to find the man who killed his daughter. Kessel, whose daughter Ruby died of her illness despite an expensive operation, understands why Schukri wants this. Although he refuses to kill the man, he accepts the offer nonetheless. After all, he needs to find a new direction in life, since his criminal record means he can no longer return to the police force. Once free, he gets in touch with Mohammed Medjoub, in whose shop Schukri’s daughter was shot. Kessel knows Medjoub knows more than he told the police. Diller also tries to stay close to Medjoub, offering him the chance to enter a witness protection program if he testifies against the killer. Prosecutor Nazari is convinced that Schukri intends to use Kessel to take revenge on his daughter’s murderer. She therefore has Kessel’s conversations tapped, unbeknownst to Diller, who remains on friendly terms with Kessel. Since Diller himself is also suspected of corruption, the prosecutor wants him monitored too as soon as he meets with Kessel. Since his release, Kessel has been working as a bartender, where he has frequent contact with many local underworld figures, including drug dealer Goran Jankovic and pimp Leon Rutten. Rutten turns up at the bar almost every day to take one of his girls back to the “hotel.” He is always extremely brutal, until one day Kessel intervenes just as brutally, gets the girl out of Rutten’s clutches, and takes her to safety. Meanwhile, Walid Schukri manages to escape from prison, putting pressure on Medjoub, who knows who the killer is. Medjoub considers cooperating with Kessel and tells him where and when he can find the man. Kessel uses this information, takes Goran Jankovic captive, and intends to hand him over to Schukri. Kessel tries in vain to convince Schukri not to take revenge on Jankovic. When that fails, he quickly takes Jankovic with him again and hands him over to Diller. Diller takes him to the police station, but is now, on the prosecutor’s orders, supposed to arrest Kessel for kidnapping. He arrives just in time to see Schukri take revenge on Kessel, effectively executing him. Diller does not hesitate and shoots Schukri on the spot.
