When a 68-year-old former hippie returns to Torremolinos for a budget all-inclusive stay, memories of her past bring her and her daughter’s very different histories into uneasy contact.

The story

More than 30 years after her chaotic hippie days in Torremolinos, 68-year-old Ingrid returns to the Spanish resort, now filled with large hotels and cheap discos. Still struggling financially and recovering from hip surgery, she stays at a budget all-inclusive hotel paid for by her daughter, Apple, instead of entering a more expensive rehabilitation program. As Ingrid revisits memories of her past, it becomes clear that Apple, then ten years old, had no place in that life. Their stay brings their very different histories into view.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

More than 30 years ago, Ingrid led a chaotic hippie life on the beach in Torremolinos, in southern Spain, with sex and drugs and no work, but always on the breadline. Now, at 68, she returns to the place as an all-inclusive tourist, where huge hotel blocks and cheap discos have since sprung up. She is still not financially “back on her feet,” so her daughter Apple pays for her stay at this budget hotel instead of a more expensive rehabilitation program, so Ingrid can get back on her feet after hip surgery. In the budget hotel’s all-inclusive culture, Ingrid reminisces about her hippie days. But it becomes clear that her ten-year-old daughter Apple had no place in that life. And that is not all. Ingrid’s affair with Karl Birker, who lived a respectable, conventional life in Torremolinos with his wife Heike and their son Tim, led to Heike’s suicide. Losing his mother was a traumatic experience for Tim, one he was unable to overcome. Thirty years later, both Ingrid’s daughter Apple and Birker’s son Tim are still traumatized. Apple has no self-esteem and repeatedly throws herself awkwardly at the wrong men. Only her French bulldog, whom she calls Dr. Sigmund Freud, listens patiently when she talks about her experiences. The bulldog suffers from hip dysplasia and needs surgery, just like Ingrid. This not only leaves Apple heavily in debt and trying once again to get involved with the next wrong man at the vet’s, but also costs her her job at the radio station because she takes the dog to work against the rules. Tim became Tina, a chiropodist who also performs karaoke at the budget hotel. Tim has not even managed to get a place of his own. He secretly sleeps with his girlfriend in his father’s room; his father now lives in a care home. Tim cannot break free from his father or the place where he grew up. So his girlfriend takes the money she has acquired through confidence tricks and goes out into the world alone, leaving Tim in great pain. As Tina, Tim recognizes Ingrid and confronts her with the devastating consequences her actions had for him after his mother’s death. Ingrid sees no personal guilt in this, only the general workings of circumstances. In the end, Karl and his son Tim, along with Ingrid and Apple, who has come to Spain after losing her job, meet at Karl’s former house. Karl has left the care home. They intend to live on Karl’s pension. A tentative closeness develops between Tim and Apple. Apple is now able to accept her mother as she is.
