After a series of mishaps leaves the Chipmunks in the care of a new guardian, they must navigate high school and a fierce rivalry with a new girl group.

The story

Two years after taking in the Chipmunks, Dave Seville is injured during a charity benefit concert in Paris and asks his aunt, Jackie, to look after them. After Jackie is also hospitalized, the Chipmunks are left in the care of Jackie's grandson, Toby, as they prepare to attend West Eastman High School. Simultaneously, a broke ex-executive named Ian Hawke discovers three new singing female chipmunks, the Chipettes, who seek to work with him. Ian signs them to resurrect his career, leading to a situation where both groups end up at the same high school, setting the stage for a musical competition.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

After Dave Seville is injured in Paris, his aunt Jackie is tasked with caring for the Chipmunks. When Jackie is also hospitalized, the Chipmunks are left with Jackie's grandson, Toby, to attend West Eastman High School. Meanwhile, Ian Hawke, a broke former executive, finds the Chipettes—three female chipmunks who mailed themselves to him. He signs them to revive his career, lying that the Chipmunks disrespected him. At school, the Chipmunks are recruited by Principal Rubin to raise money for the music program. Ian enrolls the Chipettes there too, leading to a rivalry. Alvin joins the football team and misses a concert, while the Chipettes win by default because Simon and Theodore withdraw. After a reconciliation involving a rescue from a zoo, the Chipmunks and Chipettes eventually team up. They perform together to win the music program money, while Dave returns from the hospital to find them. The jocks are punished for bullying Alvin, and Ian fails to revive his career without the Chipettes.
