A fictionalized account of the rise of the Mexican Mafia in the California prison system spans three decades of Chicano gang life.

The story

The film spans 30 years of Chicano gang life in Los Angeles, beginning with the Zoot Suit Riots of 1943. It follows a young Latino couple, Esperanza and Pedro Santana, who are racially targeted by sailors. Years later, in 1959, their son Montoya forms a street gang called La Primera with his friends. After being arrested and sent to prison, Montoya becomes a leader of a powerful prison gang known as La Eme. Upon his release in 1977, he struggles to navigate a changing society while his gang becomes a feared criminal organization involved in drug trafficking and violence.

The film spans 30 years of Chicano gang life in Los Angeles, starting with the 1943 Zoot Suit Riots where the Santana family is racially targeted. In 1959, Montoya Santana forms the gang La Primera. After being arrested and spending time in juvenile hall and Folsom State Prison, Montoya becomes the leader of the powerful gang La Eme. Upon his release in 1977, he attempts to reintegrate into society while his gang grows into a feared criminal organization. He begins a relationship with a woman named Julie, who is repulsed by his violent ties to La Eme. Conflict arises when a drug lord's son is murdered by La Eme, leading the drug lord to flood the area with heroin, causing mass overdoses including Julie's brother. After a realization of his mistakes, Montoya is sent back to prison for drug possession. He tells his friend J.D. he no longer wants to lead La Eme, but his men murder him to prove the gang's strength. Julie receives a final letter from him. The story ends with her brother, Paulito, inducting a new youth into La Primera.
