When childhood friends Peter and Katharina join a diving club, Peter grows uneasy as its instructor begins courting her.
The story
Peter and Katharina, best friends since childhood, still live in the same building and join a GST diving club after Katharina’s first solo ride on Peter’s motorcycle ends with her in a nearby pond; club members help retrieve it. The instructor, Markus, courts Katharina, who now spends her time with him, and Peter realizes he must act if he is not to lose her. His first attempts to thwart Markus backfire. After a club member suggests recruiting an all-girls team in hopes Markus will notice someone else, Peter sets out to find candidates. The young women often mistake his recruitment efforts for “cheap come-ons.”
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Peter and Katharina have known each other since childhood and are best friends. Now grown up, they still live in the same building, on the same floor. It becomes clear that, over time, something more than platonic friendship seems to have developed between them when they both accidentally join a GST diving club. This comes about because Katharina, who has just passed her driving test, accidentally ends up in a nearby pond on her first solo ride on Peter’s motorcycle. Fortunately, the diving club members are training there at the time and readily help pull the vehicle out of the water. So, to thank them, the two sign up with the club. Peter is not at all pleased that Markus, the instructor there, is flirting with and courting Katharina so enthusiastically. She spends all her time with Markus now, and Peter realizes that he has to act if he is not to lose her. But Peter’s first attempts to thwart Markus only achieve the opposite. A tip from a fellow club member leads him to campaign for an entire girls’ team. That would give them a wider pool to choose from, and Markus might take an interest in one of the new girls. First, though, Peter has to find some candidates for the diving team. This proves harder than expected, since the young women usually take Peter’s attempts to recruit them as nothing more than “cheap come-ons.” When he finally succeeds in recruiting the young Bulgarian Jonka as an interested candidate, Markus immediately takes an interest in the pretty young woman too. Katharina is not at all happy about that and, just as Peter had hoped, turns back to him. Her admiration for him grows even more when Peter heroically steps in to rescue a comrade who gets into trouble while diving. Even so, it takes a while before the two can openly confess their feelings to each other. When Jonka invites all the club members to Bulgaria to go diving, Katharina is upset and quits the club. The others, however, are delighted finally to be able to dive in warm water. After the group leaves without Katharina, she follows them because she cannot bear being at home without Peter. As soon as she arrives at the camp, Peter greets his Katharina, overjoyed. Jonka has a special surprise in store for Markus too. To bring him back down to earth, she stages a divers’ wedding between the two of them, though it is only a joke. Markus is suddenly terrified: after all, he only wanted to have fun with the girls and certainly had no intention of getting tied down. In the end, Markus has learned his lesson too.
