A new romance between a Parisian Algerian woman and a Malian man is tested by family opposition and their own missteps.
The story
In Paris, Amelle, a woman in her thirties of Algerian origin, ends her relationship after discovering her boyfriend cheating. Noom, a Malian man in his thirties, is also newly single after a disappointing encounter. They meet at the Starbucks where Amelle manages and Noom has just started working. Noom falls for her and asks her out; after their first kiss, he wants to move quickly, but Amelle—disillusioned with men—insists they wait a month before sleeping together. As they introduce their friends and begin navigating a new relationship, both discover that their families oppose the match: Amelle’s parents reject her dating a Black man, while Noom’s parents object to him dating an Arab woman.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
In Paris, Amelle (Amelle Chahbi), a woman in her thirties of Algerian origin, goes to her boyfriend’s place early one morning and discovers that he is cheating on her. Outraged, she breaks up with him. Noom (Noom Diawara), a man in his thirties of Malian origin, is thrown out by his latest conquest, who is disappointed by his poor sexual performance. Noom and Amelle meet at Starbucks, where Amelle is a manager and where Noom, hired through connections, has just started working. Noom’s supervisor, Jeff (Sébastien Castro), is in love with Amelle, though she doesn’t realize it. Noom quickly falls for Amelle and invites her to dinner at a restaurant. He invites her again, this time to a movie, and they kiss at the end of the evening. Noom wants to take things further, but Amelle refuses, disappointed in men, and insists that they wait a month before sleeping together. This requirement is going to be hard on Noom, who isn’t used to such a long period of abstinence. They decide to introduce their friends to each other: Barbara (Aude Pépin), Amelle’s friend, and Julien (Pablo Pauly), Noom’s unemployed friend. It’s love at first sight. Noom and Amelle also talk to their families: Amelle’s parents don’t want her dating a Black man, and Noom’s parents don’t want him dating an Arab woman. So each of them is forced to lie to buy some time. The four friends then go away for a weekend at Castor Village. Noom is smitten with Vanessa, a pretty employee there. Wanting to win Noom’s attention back, Amelle jumps off the diving board into the pool and starts to drown, but Vanessa rescues her. Still frustrated that he can’t sleep with Amelle, Noom tries to flirt with Vanessa at a party, but his girlfriend quickly puts him in his place. When they get back, Amelle finally gives in to Noom, bringing their relationship back together. Noom then introduces Amelle to his parents, and the meeting goes very well. Amelle, however, is still hesitant to introduce Noom to her parents, fearing her father’s reaction. So she decides not to invite her parents to the dance performance she has been preparing for weeks, to keep them from running into Noom. But Jeff, jealous of Noom, decides to get revenge by inviting Amelle’s parents to the performance so they’ll catch the couple together, leaving Amelle with no choice but to face the situation. She arranges a meeting afterward, and although it seems to go well, Amelle’s father does not accept Noom. A short time later, Amelle’s father ends up in the hospital and tells his daughter that he will disown her if she doesn’t leave Noom. She then pretends she doesn’t really love Noom to spare her father, and Noom, hurt, decides to leave her. A few weeks later, Amelle changes her mind after listening to her grandmother and tries to win Noom back, but by then he has slept with Vanessa. Six months later, Noom has finally achieved his dream of becoming a comedian. As he performs his first show, his former colleagues come to tell him that Amelle still loves him. Noom joins her in Miami, where she has just opened her restaurant, and they get back together. In a mid-credits scene, some time later, Noom and Amelle have a little girl. Barbara and Julien, passionate about cars, have opened a garage. Jeff has become a coffee vendor who travels around Paris.
