The story

Florian Richter, whose mother died shortly after his birth, grows up with his architect father, Frank, but longs for a mother. In a bookshop he meets Gabriele Welser, a bookseller who is engaged to pharmacist Walter Kuntz. Their travel plans overlap as they journey through the Wachau: Gabriele parts from Walter in Passau and continues by boat, while Florian persuades Frank to join the trip. On board, Frank and Gabriele are introduced and grow close. When Gabriele’s plans leave her waiting for a day, Florian convinces her to travel with him and Frank by car to visit his uncle in Sankt Florian.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Florian Richter’s mother died shortly after his birth, and the boy grew up with his father, Frank. Although Frank does everything he can to help his bright son, his success as an architect means he can afford a nanny and a chauffeur. Even so, ever since Florian started school, he has missed having a real mother. In a bookshop, he meets the lovely bookseller Gabriele Welser, and they immediately hit it off. They discover that they are both planning a trip through the Wachau at the same time. Florian and his father, Frank, are driven by their chauffeur, Martin, and are heading for the Abbey of Saint Florian. Gabriele, meanwhile, is planning her trip with her fiancé, pharmacist Walter Kuntz, and wants to go to Vienna to see her grandmother. Gabriele and Walter part ways in Passau, because Walter would rather take the highway than drive through the countryside. He complains about the dust in the convertible and the tires constantly wearing out, and admits that, unlike Gabriele, he has never been interested in architecture. Confused, she decides to continue her journey by boat. In Passau, she meets Florian and tells him about her travel plans. Florian, in turn, persuades his father, Frank, to continue the trip by boat to Linz, where Martin will be waiting for them with the car. On board, he introduces Frank and Gabriele, who take a liking to each other. Frank and Florian get off in Linz. Since Gabriele’s boat will not leave until the following day, Florian visits her at night and persuades her to continue the journey with them by car. The plan is to visit Florian’s uncle, Maurus, in Sankt Florian. Gabriele agrees. The three of them visit the Baroque monument of Saint Florian, where Florian prays for a new mother in the person of Gabriele. Uncle Maurus also realizes that Florian and Frank have taken Gabriele into their hearts, and encourages Frank not to let her go. However, Gabriele is taken aback when Frank makes a very clumsy marriage proposal, and she leaves in a hurry the next day. Florian secretly catches the next bus to Vienna, where he goes to Gabriele’s grandmother’s home and also meets Gabriele. Meanwhile, Walter drives his convertible from Passau to Linz, picking up a hitchhiker, Susi, along the way. He searches for Gabriele in Linz without success, then drives Susi to Vienna, where her grandmother has arranged a job for her. He gets the job, but does not accept it because he has fallen in love with Susi, who does not live in Vienna. He goes to Gabriele’s grandmother’s home, where he meets Gabriele and Florian. By this time, Gabriele has decided that she loves Frank more than Walter, and Walter also tells her that he has fallen in love with Susi. Walter leaves, and Frank comes to collect Florian. He and Gabriele finally confess their love for each other, and Gabriele’s grandmother is delighted to have her new grandchild, Florian.
