Anna turns to alcohol and pills, and falls asleep during the performance, forcing it to stop. A firefighter named Christian, who witnessed the disastrous premiere while working as its fire-safety officer, takes the half-comatose Anna to hospital. The following day, Laszlo throws her out, and debts force her to move in with her father. As she seeks work and tries to recover, Anna is drawn to Christian, though their different lives and personal difficulties complicate the relationship.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Anna Molnar is an eccentric actress going through a crisis. Her career is at its lowest point. Laszlo, the man she believes is the love of her life, her partner and a “theater director,” cheats on her with a fellow actress in her dressing room on the day of her premiere. In this situation, Anna sees only alcohol and pills as a solution. As a result, she falls asleep during the performance, which has to be stopped because of her. A new man enters Anna’s life: the handsome firefighter Christian. In his role as the fire-safety officer, he watched the disastrous premiere from the wings. Christian takes the half-comatose actress to the hospital, where Anna meets the somewhat eccentric doctor, Dr. Martin. The next day, Laszlo throws her out. Because of her debts, she is forced to move back in with her sex-addicted father, Wolf, who is cheating on his wife, Barbara. After her professional and personal downfall, Anna tries to get back on her feet and urgently looks for any kind of job, perhaps as a magician’s assistant or in television. Anna is attracted to firefighter Christian, but somehow things don’t quite work out between them, especially since they come from different worlds and Christian also has personal problems. His estranged wife, Monika, wants to take custody of their daughter away from him. After Wolf’s company goes bankrupt, his wife Barbara announces that she is going to divorce him. However, she changes her mind after undergoing surgery for a testicular tumor. One day, Monika shows up at the fire station and tells Christian that she has decided not to divorce him after all. But Christian no longer wants to be with her. After a television film starring Anna is released, she is able to repay Laszlo the money she owes him for the costs he incurred because the performance was canceled. At Laszlo’s request, Anna returns to the Theater in der Josefstadt as an actress. Christian gets divorced, and he and Anna become a couple for good.
