The story
Midwife Anna Marek plans a long-overdue vacation in Italy with her daughters, Jana and Mia. Before she can leave, her neighbor Lukas Sturm asks for help because his girlfriend Maria has gone into labor, and Anna helps deliver the baby. Her daughters are staying with Anna’s mother, and the two women argue. Exhausted, Anna sets off for Italy late that evening. But the next morning, she wakes in her own apartment, where Lukas again arrives with news that Maria is in labor. Anna soon realizes she is reliving the previous day.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The midwife Anna Marek wants to go on a long-overdue vacation with her daughters, Jana and Mia. But then her neighbor Lukas Sturm rings the doorbell because his girlfriend Maria has unexpectedly gone into labor. So Anna helps deliver the baby. Meanwhile, her children are staying with her mother, with whom, to make matters worse, she gets into an argument. Exhausted from the day’s stress, she sets off for Italy late that evening, hours later than planned. The next day, however, Anna wakes up not in Italy, but in her apartment. Lukas Sturm rings the doorbell again because his girlfriend Maria is having a baby. It quickly becomes clear that Anna is reliving the previous day from the beginning. After a while, she realizes she is trapped in a time loop. Gradually, she starts using the events to her advantage: she massively overdraws her bank account, treats herself to a life of luxury at other people’s expense, and tries to have sex with the attractive Dr. Bremer, but fails. When she realizes that even a psychologist can’t help her, she commits suicide, but that doesn’t bring the nightmare to an end either. Eventually, she develops feelings for Lukas. She also realizes that Maria is only her neighbor’s friend, not his partner. Anna now tries by every means to win Lukas as a boyfriend. She discovers that he is a grieving widower who plays in a band. But then she realizes that she will never manage it with her selfish behavior, and that showing more compassion and kindness to those around her could be a way out. In fact, everyone is now pleasantly surprised by her when she stops acting self-centered and starts showing compassion. Lukas, too, is persuaded, and goes to Italy with Anna. In the final scene, Anna wakes up in Italy—the nightmare is over.
