Full plot (contains spoilers)

Centered on encounters and conversations or speeches by Alcide De Gasperi, the film unfolds over the period from 1944 to 1954—that is, from the time when the Allies are anxiously awaited in Rome to the point when the politician, after the DC congress in Naples, where he emerges almost defeated, withdraws to Selva di Grigno. In this penultimate film of his, which unquestionably belongs to the neorealist genre, Roberto Rossellini presents a “didactic” historical account of a troubled and crucial period for Italy: the first years after the end of the war, as seen through the experiences and thought of one of the era’s most prestigious political leaders.
