The story

Antoinette Lapouge, a schoolteacher, is eagerly anticipating summer vacation with Vladimir Loubier, the father of one of her pupils and her lover. Her plans are upended when she learns he cannot join her: his wife, Éléonore, has arranged a surprise hike in the Cévennes with their daughter and a donkey. Antoinette decides to follow their route along the Stevenson Trail, traveling alone with a donkey named Patrick. Their start is difficult, as Patrick is sometimes unruly, but Antoinette begins to bond with him as she talks about her life and romantic troubles.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Antoinette Lapouge (Laure Calamy), a schoolteacher, eagerly looks forward to her summer vacation, which she plans to spend with her lover, Vladimir Loubier (Benjamin Lavernhe), the father of one of her pupils, Alice. When she learns that Vladimir cannot come because Éléonore (Olivia Côte), his wife, has arranged a surprise hike in the Cévennes with their daughter and a donkey, Antoinette decides to follow their route along the Stevenson Trail, alone with a donkey named Patrick. After a difficult start with her sometimes-unruly donkey, she eventually develops a bond with him by telling him about her life and her many romantic troubles. On the second leg of her journey, she gets lost and spends the night sleeping under the stars in the forest. In the morning, she realizes that she has actually returned to her starting point. That is when Vladimir arrives at the inn with his wife and daughter. They are, of course, surprised to see her, but suggest they travel together the next day. Éléonore has realized what kind of relationship Antoinette has with her husband, and takes her aside to describe Vladimir as a womanizer who has numerous affairs, yet remains unwaveringly devoted to his wife. Antoinette then decides to break up with him. After a fall, Antoinette sprains her ankle and thinks her hike is over. But a folk healer treats her, and she is able to continue on her way. She reaches the end of her hike, but the next morning realizes that Patrick has already set off with another tourist, without her having said goodbye to him. She runs along the trail to catch up with him and the man who has hired his services. The man is having some trouble getting Patrick to move. He offers to accompany her for a while, and she eventually agrees.
