The story

Anton, a servant whose admiration for the nobility is boundless, is pleased that his count intends to marry a baroness of ancient lineage, though he dislikes his hard-working neighbors, the Lugauers. His view changes when their heavily pregnant daughter arrives at the castle, gives birth, and tells Anton that the count’s son is the father. The son had already fallen out with his father over his intention to marry the young Lugauer woman, a match considered beneath his station. The child softens Anton’s heart, and he hides it in the castle, setting off turmoil and complications.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The servant Anton’s admiration for the nobility is boundless, and he is delighted that his master, the count, intends to marry a baroness of ancient lineage. He is not at all fond of his neighbors, the hard-working Lugauers. This changes abruptly when the Lugauers’ heavily pregnant daughter appears at the castle, gives birth, and confesses to Anton that the count’s son is the father. The son had fallen out with his father over his intention to marry the young Lugauer woman, a match considered beneath his station. The child softens old Anton’s heart, and he hides it in the castle, leading to all manner of turmoil and complications. When the baroness absolutely refuses to tolerate the child, Anton vehemently opposes this good-for-nothing woman and eventually persuades his master to abandon his plans to marry the baroness, reconcile with his son, and accept his son’s marriage to the young Lugauer woman.
