On the restaurant’s closing night, a chef who has lost his taste and smell prepares one final meal for his son’s gathering of friends.

The story

After more than twenty-five years running a restaurant in a working-class neighborhood of Paris, Hippolyte and Joséphine are preparing to close it. The reason is deeply personal: Hippolyte has cancer of the nose and has lost his sense of taste and smell, a devastating setback for a chef devoted to traditional cooking. On the restaurant’s final night, their son Barnabé invites his friends to share one last celebratory meal, prepared by his father. Hippolyte works at the stove, sharply directing two young temporary helpers and the longtime dishwasher, while Joséphine welcomes about fifteen guests from varied backgrounds, personalities, and walks of life around a large table.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

After more than twenty-five years in business in a working-class neighborhood of Paris, Hippolyte and Joséphine have decided to close their restaurant. Not for economic or urban-planning reasons, but for something more serious: Hippolyte has cancer of the nose, which has robbed him of his sense of taste and smell. A catastrophe for a chef devoted to traditional little dishes lovingly simmered! Tonight is closing night. To mark the occasion, Barnabé, the couple’s only son, has invited all his friends to one last celebratory meal, naturally prepared by his father, while Joséphine works the dining room as usual. At the stove, Hippolyte puts the finishing touches to the meal, brusquely ordering around his two young temporary helpers and his old dishwasher, while, welcomed by Joséphine, around fifteen guests—young men and women of different backgrounds, personalities, aspirations, and life paths—noisily gather around a large table.
