A celebrated ladies’ man with no desire to test his reputation must choose between unwanted erotic lessons and a bullet before his wedding.

The story

In Austria-Hungary, Lieutenant Ferdinand Hutter is celebrated by his regiment as an irresistible ladies’ man, a reputation built largely on his father’s erotic collection. In reality, childhood experiences have left Ferdinand sexually abstinent and with no desire to try sex with women. His predicament grows urgent as he prepares to marry the wealthy, attractive Baroness Beate, who expects him to live up to rumors about his virility. Facing a choice between a bullet and lessons in the erotic arts he detests, Ferdinand is due to receive an introduction to sex at his bachelor party, from the famed Josefine Mutzenbacher at a brothel.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

In the “good old days” of Austria-Hungary, Imperial and Royal Lieutenant Ferdinand Hutter has a reputation for possessing an extraordinary sex drive, and is accordingly revered by his regiment. Supposedly, not a single woman can resist him, the “ladies’ man.” This reputation is based on his father’s legacy: he owned a considerable collection of pornographic pictures and the erotic novel *Josefine Mutzenbacher*. Hutter’s comrades firmly believe that a man with such a family background must be a great lover. But the reality is quite different. As a child, little Ferdinand had to watch his aunt and mother read the Mutzenbacher novel aloud to each other and then engage in lesbian play. His strict governess caught the little voyeur rummaging through his father’s porn collection and spanked him. When his father shot himself and his mother married another man, Ferdinand had to live with his aunt, who was no shrinking violet either. All of this has led him to feel no desire to try things with the opposite sex for himself, and he has therefore become sexually abstinent. Since he is soon planning to marry the equally wealthy and attractive Baroness Beate, who expects an exceptional performance in bed because of the rumors about his supposed virility, Ferdinand is in a predicament. At first he sees no way out and has to choose: a bullet, or lessons in the erotic arts he detests. On the evening of his bachelor party, he is to receive a general introduction to sex at a brothel, from the acknowledged expert herself: Josefine Mutzenbacher, whose reputation as a master of lovemaking is unrivaled. She goes all out and first explains the basic nature of women to Hutter, but when she fails to get very far, a completely different woman proves to be the master key to Hutter’s libido, which he had thought long buried.
