The story
Kati and Felix meet, fall in love and marry, but after five years their once-dreamlike relationship is strained by routine and Felix’s demanding work as a doctor. Kati meets artist Mathias and develops feelings for him, though she initially keeps her distance rather than betray her husband. When an accident unexpectedly sends her five years into the past, to the day before she first met Felix, she decides to use her knowledge of the future to change things. Most of all, she tries to avoid meeting Felix and pursues the possibility of a life with Mathias, even as their paths keep crossing.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The chaotic Kati accidentally meets Felix, a doctor. They fall in love at once and soon get married. Their first years together are like a dream, but after five years of marriage, everyday life has gradually set in. Felix has since been promoted to senior physician and is increasingly tied up with work. He cancels plans with Kati more and more often because of emergencies at the clinic. When she does get to see him, he is usually so exhausted that he falls asleep. Then Kati meets the artist Mathias. She falls in love with him, but keeps her distance because she does not want to cheat on Felix. Gradually, Kati begins to wonder whether Felix is the right man for her and whether she really wants to grow old with him. Finally, fate plays a trick on her: After an accident, Kati finds herself five years in the past, exactly one day before she first met Felix. Once she has accepted that, for inexplicable reasons, she has made a leap through time, she decides to use what she knows about the years to come to improve a few things, for example in her friends’ lives. Above all, however, she tries to avoid Felix so they will never meet and each can live their own life. Now unattached, she tracks down Mathias and begins a relationship with him. Nevertheless, Kati and Felix keep running into each other. A conversation with her friend Frau Baronski, in particular, gradually helps Kati realize that life with Mathias will not turn out any better than life with Felix: Frau Baronski tells her that “the grass is always greener on the other side.” But once you are on the other side, you quickly realize “it’s only grass” there, too. Later, while dazed after accidentally taking drugs, Kati writes Felix a letter. In it, she tells him that although he does not know her, she knows him very well. In rather confusing terms, she also writes something about his present and future. Still in her drug-induced haze, she puts the letter in his mailbox. Later, when sober, she regrets it and tries to get the letter back before Felix can read it. At first she succeeds, but in the end the letter falls into Felix’s hands after all. Meanwhile, Mathias has gained a new supporter for his art: Gereon, Felix’s best friend and the son of Felix’s boss. Kati goes with Mathias to Gereon’s birthday party, where she runs into Felix again. From Kati’s letter, Felix has learned that his girlfriend Lilian and Gereon are having an affair and are both cheating on him. He confronts them, and it ends in a dramatic scene. During the confrontation, Kati increasingly notices how much she and Felix have in common. Felix and Kati eventually leave the party, followed by Mathias. Outside, Kati talks to Mathias: She has never been as in love as she is with him, but the two of them still cannot be together. She does not know whether Mathias will understand, but there is another world she had long thought she had lost. They both regret the situation. Finally, they part with heavy hearts. Kati turns around and sees Felix. He says he has a lot of questions for her, but above all he wants to know who she really is. She introduces herself as “Kati.” They begin talking about their future together and walk away.
