Sabine Schuster is an elementary school teacher who suffers a stroke during a theater rehearsal with her pupils. This tears her and her husband Stefan, a forester, out of their familiar routine. While Sabine has to relearn skills such as speaking and walking in rehabilitation, Stefan adapts their home in Ilmenau to her needs. However, Sabine is frustrated by her condition and avoids contact with her former circle, including her friends Anna and Paul. She also misses her job and hiking, a shared passion of the Schusters. Stefan arranges care from Iryna, a caregiver whose optimistic but demanding manner brings a breath of fresh air. After a hike up their favorite mountain, Sabine realizes that she must actively fight her way back to her old life, step by step. Further therapies bring improvements in her health, and the Schusters also begin working on their marriage. Sabine resumes theater rehearsals with her pupils at home. Her relationship with her 24-year-old daughter Annika also improves. Annika had originally planned to go to Berlin to study, but stayed after her mother fell ill. However, Sabine suffers a second attack. The insurer wants them to sell their house because many of the therapies are not covered. Stefan is afraid that Sabine will give up and wonders whether he can go through all of this again. She asks him to help her if her condition should stop improving, but Stefan refuses. Some time later, Sabine has fought her way back once again, and she and Stefan go on vacation together.
