The story

A man revisits an unsolved childhood murder after a new investigation threatens his relationship and forces him to question his own memories.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Tom left his hometown of Haimersheim for Frankfurt years ago, where he is happily involved with Eva. He and his school friend Chris have just opened a bike shop. Their school friend Dominik, who has been a criminal investigator for a month, also comes to the opening. Tom sees Dominik again the very next evening, but this time in an official capacity. As part of a new investigation into a sexual murder in their hometown eight years earlier, Dominik has to take a saliva sample from Tom. Eva learns that Tom was the prime suspect in the murder of eleven-year-old Adrian at the time, but nothing could be proven against him. This puts increasing strain on Eva and Tom’s relationship, as Eva begins to doubt whether she can trust Tom. Tom himself starts to doubt his memories of that time. He sets out to investigate his past and find out what really happened. At first, he finds no leads in Haimersheim, but learns that a former girlfriend, Laura, now lives in Offenbach. Laura, a freelance artist, admits to Tom that she gave Chris a false alibi back then, which led to Tom being suspected. Tom angrily confronts Chris. Chris had needed the alibi because he didn’t want trouble with the police over a drug-related matter. By now, the police have analyzed the saliva sample. Dominik intercepts Tom and tells him that the DNA is his and that he should flee immediately. Tom and Laura drive to her parents’ house, where she has kept many old photographs. They find clues in them that make Dominik seem suspicious. Tom’s memories grow clearer: he found the body back then, and is now certain that Dominik committed the murder. A little later, Dominik turns up in Haimersheim to look for Tom. They meet in the woods, at the scene of the crime. Just as Dominik is about to attack Tom and Laura with a stick, his father arrives, out hunting in the woods. To Dominik’s surprise, his father does not take his side, but instead struggles with his son, whose inclinations he knew about. He points his rifle at his own son. As the camera pans away, a shot rings out.
