Avanzi di galera (1954)

After serving their sentences, three prisoners are released. Stefano, a surgeon, had been convicted of causing the death of one of his patients. He no longer has confidence in himself and does not want to return to practicing medicine, but a serious accident involving his beloved wife, Giulia, convinces him to go back into the operating room. There, he manages to save her life—and his own as well. Franco, a robber, was arrested during a bank raid while his accomplices managed to escape. After getting out of prison, he returns to his woman, Anna, while his accomplices want to know where he hid the loot before being arrested. But he says nothing, confiding only in Anna, and she goes to the police to report him. There, however, she learns that the loot had already been recovered by the Mobile Squad. Franco, still unaware that Anna has betrayed him, goes to the place where he had hidden the bag containing the stolen goods, but Anna catches up with him, followed in turn by the accomplices. After a shootout, both Franco and Anna are killed. Giuseppe, convicted of a theft he did not commit, is released for good behavior. Once free, however, he encounters a certain distrust among both his relatives and his friends. By now disheartened, he finds peace only with Giovanna, a nurse who trusts him.
