The story

Young Ishtar accompanies her grandfather, Bab’Aziz, across the desert as they travel toward a gathering of dervishes held only once every thirty years. Their journey is shaped by the old man’s tales and legends, and by encounters with people whose destinies become part of the stories they share. The destination has a particular meaning for Bab’Aziz: he is also making his way toward a grave marked by a square of stones. The article frames the interwoven journeys and stories as resembling One Thousand and One Nights.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Young Ishtar accompanies her grandfather (Bab’Aziz) through the desert on their way to a gathering of dervishes that takes place only once every thirty years. For Bab’Aziz, the journey is really about reaching his grave, marked out by a square of stones. But the old man is a source of tales and legends, and their journey will bring encounters and stories of many different destinies, a little like in One Thousand and One Nights.
